money is supposed to be a mechanism, that people intuitively grasp, ensures that there is some justice. but when they debase the money, it reverts everything back to barbarism.
the secret sauce is a culture steeped in a philosophy of private, polycentric law. prior to the inception of the jewish monarchy, when they disobeyed God and ignored Samuel's advice against it (which basically was that this would lead to war) i think that dates back like 4000 years and money already existed, but most of the world was not under the jackboot of imperial power. most people lived in villages, cities were rarely not already captured by that time in history. jericho was one rare example, that was extremely long in its history, 9000 years supposedly.
polycentric law basically means no government and a market in jurisprudence. they have a somewhat similar principle operating in a lot of the less urbanised islamic settlements in the middle east and north africa, and also in israel, where conflicts were brought to the imam or the rabbi for a process of adjudication.
the money thing is true, in some sense, that debasement of currency and an arbitrary privilege to define what money is (aka fiat money), but the horse has already bolted by this point because people have started to wave flags and cheer for the king like he's a god and that's really the root of the problem. collectivism and authoritarianism, and the idea that an elite group can make a judgement that will work for everyone's benefit. it never does, and it always eventually decays into corruption.

it's not likely anyone living a comfortable life is going to try it though. i had no money, and no hope at the time. i spent the next 6 months or so through the winter and was guided back to my favourite city, Sofia, and there i weathered the winter in relative comfort, on the street, but full of purpose. it was my "conversion on teh road to damascus" experience. up until that point i was mostly in a mind of deterministic nihilism. and then i found the opposite pole, of deterministic infinity. the two things are valid but one is a road to hell.

I got sick of pretending things were fine.
Nothing radicalized me, I just started paying attention.
Every day, you’re told to smile while getting scanned, tracked, logged, sold. We lost the fun P2P internet we had in the 90’s and it became corporate. Terms and conditions as long as books. Apps you can’t just buy anymore, only monthly subscription fees while they suck every bit of personal data they can from you. Cameras on every block. Microphones in your pocket. Cell tower drops. Mass surveillance as the default and people still call it freedom.
Palantir, Chainalysis, freaking Google
I watched the creep happen. So did you. One update at a time. One convenience at a time. Until one day you realize your life isn’t yours anymore. It’s data on someone else’s server. You are a commodity packaged and sold.
So I started giving friendly tips to people on nostr. Then I started writing. I just wanted to say what no one around me was saying out loud. I wanted to bring back the cypherpunk spirit. I wanted to contribute because it was the right thing to do.
We all can see what is happening but few people seem to care. Fewer realize that there is anything they can do about it.
This blog is a punch to the nose to complacency. A middle finger to passive acceptance. A notebook for people who still believe in owning their mind, their files, their fate.
I’m not selling you privacy. I’m helping you claw it back.

Agreed. Not sure what the solution is, though.
The freedom to choose which relays you use is a fundamental principle that we should not abandon, though. Moreover, the outbox model is needed to allow relay selection to remain decentralized.
That means clients are going need to have sensible defaults for new users who don't yet have any relays listed in a kind 10002 or kind 3, so that there is little pain felt immediately upon joining.
We are going to need to have better options for those who want to run their own personal relays, too. Haven is great, but it requires someone technically inclined to run it. We need something like Haven that is click to download, double click to install, and has a GUI for setup and management, and no messing around with setting up a reverse proxy if we expect average users to take advantage of it.
On top of this, we need tools for users to find relays they might want to use that spell out, in plain language, why they would add them to one relay list and not to another.
