does something like this exist already on nostr? : Uncle Jim-enabled nsecs + private community "beginner's island"
explaining:
- Uncle Jim (UJ) sets up a relay intended to serve a private set of users
- there is some special client app these people will use
- the users, when they are invited and create npubs, choose a username and passsword (rather than record an nsec or see the word "key").
- the username becomes their NIP05, the password decrypts their nsec in the client for signing. Ideally, UJ never stores their nsec plaintext, though he is running some server that holds the encrypted versions.
- everyone uses this relay and client happily, seeing it as some community-focused discussion app, without realizing they're using nostr (yet)
- UJ (and perhaps others) can interact with people in the private community, but can also access the rest of nostr, of course
- as appropriate, UJ's little nostr fledglings can learn about the rest of nostr, take control of their keys and go off into the rest of ecosystem, too (while keeping access to the private group)

How to instantly drop a grudge:
You **could**, theoretically, drop any grudge at any moment, if you were sufficiently forgiving/enlightened/understanding/whatever.
Therefore, the fact that you don't drop the grudge is either:
- A failing of yours
- Or: you don't find those qualities to be important.
If it's the former, congratulations - it's not the other person's fault. therefore: grudge dropped; as assenting that it's not the other person's fault is synonymous with letting the grudge go.

no disagreement whatsoever that X and any other platform can and do prevent people from seeing others' content. they do that for a lot of different reasons - all of which I disagree with - and they only have the ability to do it because the users make the original error of domiciling "their data" with someone else.
this is why I don't have accounts with those things.
the story isn't quite so clear though when the question isn't just "does this centralized platform fuck around with who gets to see what inside their playground?" but instead "onto how many other servers do you copy your stuff, how many of those do you own, which of those have their own subtle rules about moderation and access, what NIPs do they support, what kind of performance and scale do they possess, how many other people are connected to which ones, etc etc." It's an unanswerable complex.
this is a good thing.
to me, there are as many different pictures of "reach" in that complex as there are combinations of people, notes and infrastructure pieces.
in one permutation, a certain message may only be visible to 20 people due to some simple constraints. in another, almost **everyone** paying attention to the protocol may see a particular note.
the concept of free speech is not nonsensical and it is directly related to the above. the presence of an open protocol **is** the existence proof / what defines free speech. I CAN construct a message that conforms to a particular Kind, documented at a particular commit. nobody can stop me from forming that message. that's free speech. granted it's sort of weak and useless without reach, but its existence as a base fact makes all the difference because it can become a Schelling point. (and has. look around).
not everything is like that. I may not be able to arrange bytes in a way that conforms to some proprietary format because I don't know the rules and don't have the tools - because these things are secret. that won't become a schelling point for anyone *outside* the special inner circle. It's not an open protocol because nobody is free to create that kind of speech.
once you have the basic component of that kind of permissionless speech, you can get schelling points via persuasion and value-adds, and aligned individuals and groups build voluntary reach channels as befit their goals and interests together. very many of these grow and evolve organically and eventually you have the complex I described above.
I'm not sure what we're disagreeing about, if anything.

what about if someone is following me on nostr but I only post notes to a single personal relay (completely uncensorable) and they don't have that relay in their subscriptions?
my reach to them is zero, but my speech is unlimited (to my own relay). my point is reach is an emergent property of the current dynamics of the network topology, infrastructure, costs, client software, etc. speech is different. I can post to my own relay with 100% confidence in freedom of my speech. but I can't control my reach (I can nudge it) just like someone else cannot force me to broadcast their message (their reach)

(sorry, I have a but...) do you find it at all worrying that all nostr development will actually turn into "notedeck development"? the browser and http are amazingly open systems. if more and more nostr applications and features "only work in notedeck", I would count that as a mild setback in internet openness progress.
will the "notedeck approach" be like an open protocol that other people can implement in their own software such that "Notedeck apps just work" in those other softwares, the way websites mostly "just work" in any browser? (see Chrome as the negative case there)

For what it's worth, I think that this is the right place to be building. it's not _so_ radical for the "regular folk", and I have a strong conviction that making stuff normie-friendly is purely a UI/UX challenge and is entirely surmountable, once the underlying tech is in place.
I also prefer to work in this in-between place. I think it'll be the most fertile ground pretty soon. Either way, we need people all over this spectrum, and the middle is the least populated - someone's gotta do it!
