With estimates of up to 72,000 meteors per hour lighting up the heavens, this celestial spectacle became etched in history.
From Indigenous calendars to the writings of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, the event left an indelible mark on culture and science. Thanks to Yale astronomer Denison Olmsted's pioneering investigation, we now know it was the Leonids — Earth passing through the debris of comet Tempel-Tuttle.
This night didn’t just light up the sky — it sparked one of the first crowd-sourced scientific studies and forever changed how we view meteor showers.
