이번 퍼블릭 데이에서 가장 인상 깊었던 연설
비트코인이 가져다주는 ‘자유’라는 개념에 대해 폭넓게 생각해보게 됨
민주주의 국가 안에서의 경제적 자유 침해가 아쉬운 일인건 맞지만,
생존 자체가 위협받는 이들에게는 그런 고민조차 사치일 수 있다는 생각도 들었음
- The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)의 세계 민주주의 지수에 따르면, 전 세계 국가 중 ‘민주주의 국가’로 분류되는 비율은 약 44%, 그 중 ‘완전한 민주주의’는 13%뿐임 (정치체제는 스펙트럼 상에 분포되어서, 혼합 민주주의, 결함 있는 민주주의 등의 형태로 다양하게 존재함)
- 권위주의 (Authoritarianism) : 독재적 혹은 과두적인 정권이 정치적 통제를 위해 강력한 중앙집권 권력을 행사함. 시민의 자유와 법치주의가 대부분 무시됨. 국가의 시스템보다 권력 유지를 우선시하는 경향이 강함
1️⃣ 권위주의 국가에서의 심각한 인권 및 자유 침해
권위주의 국가들이 전 세계 여러 문제에서 차지하는 비율
- 전 세계 난민의 97%
- 아직도 진행중인 무력충돌의 79%
- 기본 식수 접근성이 최악인 20개국 중 18개국
- 인신매매 근절 실패 국가들 중 90%
- 세계 최빈국 10개국 중 9개국
➡ 권위주의는 단순히 정치적 문제를 넘어, 사람들이 살아갈 기본적 자유를 무너뜨리는 체제
2️⃣ 비트코인이 권위주의 정권에 대항할 해답이 되는 이유 (너무나 당연하지만)
- 검열 저항성 (censorship-resistant) - 누구도 막을 수 없음
- 압수 저항성 (seizure-resistant) - 쉽게 빼앗기지 않음
- 무경계성 (borderless) - 국경을 자유롭게 넘을 수 있음
- 허가 불필요 (permissionless) - 누구나 사용할 수 있음
- 가명성 기반 (pseudonymous) - 신원 노출 없이 거래 가능
- 프로그래밍 가능성 (programmable) - 조건부 자금 조달 가능(횡령 및 외부 노출 예방)
- 개인 간 직접 연결 (peer-to-peer) - 중개자 없이 개인 간 직접 연결 가능
➡ 이 모든 특성들이 단순히 기술적 특성만이 아니라 ‘존재할 자유’를 가능하게 함
3️⃣ 실제 사례들
1. 🇷🇺 러시아 – 나발니 후원 사례
- 반부패 운동가 알렉세이 나발니, 재단 설립 후 SNS와 시위를 통해 정권 비판
- 선거 출마 저지 목적으로 러시아 정부가 횡령 혐의 적용 → 장기 수감
- 가택 연금, 인터넷 금지, 독살 시도, 고문 등 다양한 인권 침해를 당한 후 교도소에서 사망
- 생전 계좌 동결이 반복되자, 지지자들이 익명으로 비트코인 후원 진행
- 2016~2021년 사이에 총 657 BTC가 모금되었고, 2021년엔 주말 이틀간 3.5 BTC가 모이기도 함
- 특정한 목적이 있었기에 장기적인 관점으로 볼 수는 없었고, 즉시 환전해 사용해야 했지만, 단순한 자금 조달을 넘어 '정부의 탄압 의지를 약화시키는 예상 외의 효과'를 불러일으킴

2. 🇳🇬 나이지리아 – 반정부 시위 및 화폐 평가절하 대응 사례
- 국정화폐 나이라의 심각한 평가절하로 비트코인에 대한 관심이 폭발적으로 증가함
- 2020년 10월, 경찰의 폭력과 무제한 권력에 저항하는 대규모 시위가 일어남
- 정부가 이를 탄압하기 위해 시위 주최자 및 관련자들의 은행 계좌를 동결하자, 국민들은 이에 맞서 비트코인을 더욱 활발히 사용하기 시작함
- 정부는 다시 암호화폐 관련 활동이 있는 사람들을 조사하였고, 조금이라도 의심스러운 부분이 있으면 전부 계좌 정지시킴
- 이후로도 시민들은 굴하지 않고 P2P 거래 방식으로 정부의 통제를 적극적으로 회피하는 중
<나이지리아 CBDC를 통한 억압>
- 2021년 eNaira라는 이름으로 CBDC를 출시하였으나 현금 부족 사태를 초래하여 현금 복구를 요구하는 시위와 폭동이 발생함.
- 그럼에도 불구하고 2022년, 나이지리아 중앙은행 총재 고드윈 에메피엘은 다음과 같은 발언을 함.
“내가 생각하는 목적지는 나이지리아의 100% 현금 없는 경제 실현이다.”
- 결국 국민들의 사용을 끌어내지 못하고 외면받았고, 2025년 2월 기준 CBDC 총액은 여전히 전체 유통 통화의 0.37%에 머물러 있음.

3. 🇲🇲 미얀마 – 군부 통제 속에서서의 생존 사례
- 1945년 독립 이후 미얀마는 70년 넘게 내전 상태 지속. 군사 쿠데타와 경제 혼란이 반복되었고, 자국 통화를 폐지한 경험도 있음
- 2020년, 미얀마 중앙은행은 암호화폐를 법정 통화로 인정하지 않겠다는 입장을 발표. 디지털 자산 거래가 적발될 경우 징역형이나 벌금형에 처해질 수 있음
- 2021년 2월, 군사 쿠데타 발생. 정권에 반대하는 목소리를 낸 시민들은 강경 진압 대상이 되었고, SNS 활동만으로도 은행 계좌가 동결되며 자금 접근 자체가 차단됨
- 생계 유지와 저축 사용이 모두 불가능해졌고, 현금은 있었지만 쓸 수 없는 상황에 처함

<자연재해 구호 통제에 대항>
- 2023년 미얀마에서 3,500명 이상 사망한 규모 7.7의 지진이 발생했을 때, 군부는 가장 큰 피해를 입은 지역의 접근을 차단하고, 피난민을 향해 공습까지 감행하며 국제 구호와 재정 지원을 원천 봉쇄함
- 그러나 비트코인을 기반으로 한 P2P 방식의 구호 활동은 군부의 금융 통제를 피해 사람들에게 직접 도달함

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) arrested a 22-year-old man who was on the run from the law on Monday afternoon (9). The arrest occurred during a routine inspection on the BR-070 highway in Ceilândia, a region in the Federal District. The suspect was stopped while driving a GM/Corsa vehicle. During the document check, police officers found, through the PRF's systems, that there was an outstanding arrest warrant against him. The judicial order was issued by the District Federal and Territories Court (TJDFT), based on a definitive conviction for drug trafficking. According to the PRF, the man has a extensive criminal record, with 12 registered incidents. Among his antecedents, there are six drug trafficking convictions, four for drug possession for personal use, one for illegal possession of ammunition, and one for resisting arrest. In addition to the arrest, the car driven by the suspect was taken to the PRF's impound lot because it had an irregular license. He was taken to the 15th Police Station in Ceilândia, where the arrest warrant was formally executed.

Dude I’m not a developer. I shouldn’t have to read all these docs lmao good UX should take care of this. I understand bitcoin and I have a basic understanding of lightning. I know you need channels and inbound/outbound liquidity. But there’s just way too much information here. And I understand why it’s designed that way. Transparency is important but most of this info is overwhelming for the average user and a normie will never sit through reading all these docs.
