Their main error was in assuming that they knew at which point humans would begin to reduce their numbers, so when they calculated a much-smaller number, they freaked out that humans kept right on increasing past that and assumed it would just never reverse, and we'd need more planets. Meltdown ensued.
But, now, it's beginning to slow and eventually reverse, and they look sorta stupid.
They never considered the fact that more and more humans could be sustained by the same amount of Earth, through technological progress. Malthus didn't foresee that, but neither did they.
They also thought we would quickly run out of oil and now there's a glut of oil and prices are collapsing.

Antes tarde do que nunca. Cada vez mais pessoas estão pensando em praticar exercícios físicos após os 50 anos de idade. É uma boa ideia? As várias associações médicas concordam que sim: o exercício físico não é apenas fundamental para prevenção de doenças, mas também é recomendado como parte do tratamento de muitas doenças.
Entretanto, movimentar-se nessa fase da vida requer alguns cuidados. Isso é especialmente verdadeiro para aqueles que nunca foram fisicamente ativos ou para pessoas com sobrepeso ou obesas.
Está comprovado que começar a se exercitar com rotinas muito exigentes, especialmente se combinadas com uma dieta inadequada, pode levar a lesões significativas, tanto musculares quanto esqueléticas.
Esse risco é ainda maior após os 50 anos de idade, pois a perda de massa muscular e óssea é acentuada devido ao envelhecimento natural.
Portanto, antes de iniciar qualquer programa de exercícios, é aconselhável fazer um exame de sangue completo para avaliar a necessidade de suplementação em caso de deficiências de micronutrientes.
O papel fundamental da proteína
Além dos micronutrientes, o corpo precisa de macronutrientes, ou seja, carboidratos, gorduras e proteínas. As proteínas fornecem ao sistema humano os aminoácidos essenciais necessários para manter e desenvolver a massa muscular e para prevenir a sarcopenia, que é a perda de massa e força muscular associada ao envelhecimento (classicamente chamada de fragilidade), lesão muscular e osteoporose.
As necessidades de proteína variam de acordo com a situação clínica do indivíduo. Em pessoas com mais de 50 anos de idade que são moderadamente ativas fisicamente, as necessidades de proteína variam de 1 a 1,5 gramas por quilograma de peso corporal por dia.
Entretanto, a ingestão de proteínas não deve ser aumentada, a menos que seja acompanhada de exercícios físicos compatíveis com a ingestão. O excesso de proteína pode ter efeitos contraproducentes, especialmente na saúde óssea, pois foi observado que ela pode aumentar a excreção urinária de cálcio (calciúria) devido à diminuição da reabsorção tubular de cálcio.

Origem vegetal ou animal, mas em equilíbrio
As fontes de proteína devem combinar as de origem vegetal, como soja, tremoço, sementes de abóbora, amendoim ou lentilhas, entre outras, com as de origem animal, como ovos, laticínios, aves ou peixes.
Por outro lado, embora o ideal seja ter uma dieta com presença equilibrada de ambos os tipos de nutrientes, foi demonstrado que seguir as diretrizes dietéticas vegetarianas é compatível com esportes de alto desempenho se houver acompanhamento médico-nutricional adequado.
Além do que, o quando também é importante. Distribuir a ingestão de proteínas ao longo do dia é mais benéfico do que concentrá-la em uma única refeição. Nesse sentido, se também garantirmos uma ingestão adequada de proteína 30 minutos antes ou depois do exercício, sua absorção e disponibilidade no corpo serão maiores.
Micronutrientes essenciais: magnésio, cálcio e vitamina D
Quanto aos micronutrientes (vitaminas e minerais), alguns deles desempenham um papel fundamental na prática esportiva nessa idade, como o magnésio, o cálcio e a vitamina D.
O magnésio ajuda na recuperação muscular e na formação óssea. Esse micronutriente pode ser encontrado em alimentos como farelo de trigo, queijo, sementes de abóbora e sementes de linhaça.
Quanto ao cálcio, ele é essencial para manter a mineralização óssea adequada e evitar a perda da densidade mineral óssea (osteopenia) associada à deficiência de cálcio no sangue.
Tradicionalmente, um dos grandes aliados da saúde óssea tem sido a ingestão de produtos lácteos, tanto pela biodisponibilidade (o grau e a velocidade com que um medicamento passa para o sangue e atinge seu local de ação) de cálcio quanto pelo teor de vitamina D em suas versões lácteas de leite integral.

Outros alimentos de origem vegetal, como pasta de gergelim, amêndoas, linhaça, soja e avelãs, também são considerados fontes de cálcio, mas seu teor de fitato e oxalato pode dificultar sua absorção.
Por fim, os peixes gordurosos (atum, bonito, sardinha, salmão etc.) e a gema de ovo são considerados fontes complementares de vitamina D, dentro de um padrão alimentar voltado para pessoas acima de 50 anos que praticam exercícios físicos.
Não é menos importante manter a hidratação adequada antes, durante e depois do exercício. Tanto a desidratação quanto o excesso de hidratação podem afetar o desempenho e aumentar o risco de lesões musculares.
O tipo de exercício é importante?
Até agora, vimos como a dieta influencia o desempenho atlético e, por fim, o risco de lesões. Mas há outro x na equação: o exercício que você faz.
Nesse ponto, há atualmente um debate interessante sobre qual tipo de exercício é o mais adequado de acordo com a idade, o gênero ou a composição corporal; se é melhor priorizar o treinamento de força, alternar com sessões de cardio ou fazer ambos em dias diferentes.
Entretanto, apesar das diferentes teorias sobre o assunto, uma coisa é certa: o exercício regular, adaptado às habilidades de cada pessoa e com um bom acompanhamento médico e nutricional, reduz o risco de várias doenças e melhora a qualidade de vida.
