Their main error was in assuming that they knew at which point humans would begin to reduce their numbers, so when they calculated a much-smaller number, they freaked out that humans kept right on increasing past that and assumed it would just never reverse, and we'd need more planets. Meltdown ensued.
But, now, it's beginning to slow and eventually reverse, and they look sorta stupid.
They never considered the fact that more and more humans could be sustained by the same amount of Earth, through technological progress. Malthus didn't foresee that, but neither did they.
They also thought we would quickly run out of oil and now there's a glut of oil and prices are collapsing.
