Een man uit Wales die in 2013 een harde schijf met daarop zijn bitcoin-portemonnee met een waarde van ruim 720.000 euro kwijtraakte, overweegt nu de vuilstortplaats in zijn gemeente op te kopen. De man wil de stortplaats doorzoeken, omdat hij ervan overtuigd is dat zijn harde schijf tussen het afval ligt.
De 39-jarige James Howells uit Newport spande een rechtszaak aan om de gemeente te dwingen hem toe te staan de afvalbergen te doorzoeken, maar verloor die onlangs.
Daarom overweegt hij nu om de stortplaats op te kopen, aangezien de gemeente van plan is om de locatie binnen afzienbare tijd te sluiten. "Ik heb de optie besproken met investeringspartners en het is zeker iets dat op tafel ligt", zegt hij tegen The Guardian.
Verkeerde schijf weggegooid
De man, een IT-specialist, probeert al ruim tien jaar zijn bitcoinfortuin terug te vinden. In 2013 bracht zijn toenmalige vriendin, na het opruimen van hun huis, per ongeluk de verkeerde harde schijf naar de gemeentelijke stortplaats. Howells vroeg de gemeente de afgelopen jaren meerdere keren om toestemming om er te gaan graven, maar kreeg die nooit.
Ook op het voorstel om een kwart van zijn bitcoin-portemonnee aan de gemeente te schenken als ze hem zouden helpen, werd niet ingegaan. De gemeente is van mening dat de harde schijf gemeentelijk eigendom is geworden toen deze op de vuilstortplaats terechtkwam.
De man is van plan de zaak voor te leggen aan het hooggerechtshof.
