If relays had pubkey identities that were checked in protocol, relays could publish events advertising which IP address(es) they are running off of. Then we could ditch DNS and certificates, people's trust in a particular relay would follow the key rather than the domain name, and relays could inhabit many IP addresses and be seen as the same relay.

I don't think fiatjaf is implying any bad intent or agenda at all. Even with Twitter, the intent was always good (afaik), but the natural way things naturally progress and change gave us the outcomes you are familiar with.
Also, your 2nd paragraph sounds to me like "if nostr users don't centralize, they will be REQUIRED to centralize." You might want to explain that a bit more.

I'm not suggesting aggregating everything, just doing the fetching on behalf of the clients and using the local cache to assist if possible.
Also of course the caching proxy would be doing the outbox model.
-

@ ee11a5df:b76c4e49
2024-04-10 20:09:19
What if we specify as an open standard (in protocol) a client proxy service, such that nothing about it ever ties a client to a particular one. All they do is offload the fetching work. If you suspect they aren't serving you correctly you point your client to a different one. As long as there is no friction involved in switching away from a proxy that is censoring, I don't think there would be a drive for them to aggregate into a single service. You wouldn't be switching apps, you'd be pointing your app elsewhere.

It seems to currently only track onion message support. Though onion messages are the main building block for BOLT12 features such as:
• Offers (static QR codes)
• Async Payments (offline receive for self-custody mobile wallets)
Other features like blinded paths tie into these ( see https://bolt12.org ). It’s my understanding that the following Lightning implementations fully support BOLT12:
• LDK
• Core-Lightning
• Eclair
LND currently does not. Though LNDK is available if you’re running LND. But that currently only supports onion messages, not yet blinded paths:
https://github.com/lndk-org/lndk

Spam and illegal content get in, but they can't get out.
Input from unknown sources gets stalled in a moderation queue and not served back out (except to authorized users of the relay, they can see it). So if someone replies to you, you immediately see it, but others watching the conversation don't see it until it passes moderation.
This means I can moderate "lazily", I don't have to be on edge ready to quickly take something down.

Yeah I'm reading that elsewhere too. So a given computer can only connect to my chorus port 64k times over, but each other computer on the Internet can also connect to my chorus port 64k times over. Yes I count how many sessions are open, I could stop accepting requests when that number gets too high. In my deployment scenario it only gets to 70 tops, but there are only 3 of us on there.
I'm using asynchronous rust. It doesn't use one-thread-per-socket. Instead, there is one-thread-per-core, and whenever a thread hits a wait point (waiting for socket I/O or a timer or anything else) the task gets shelved, and as soon as an event happens related to any of the shelved tasks, an idle thread goes and handles it up to the next await point. All cores can be fully busy if I/O becomes ready fast enough, but most of the time all cores are just waiting for I/O.
TCP/IP ports are 16-bits, so the maximum port is 65535. Ports below 1024 are reserved for system services and aren't randomly allocated. Each websocket connection uses one of these 16-bit ports among these 64511 available ports. You can't have more network connections than that AFAIK. So we can't serve 1 million clients simultaneously. I might be wildly wrong about this.

Other solutions people have suggested: charging a fee to post; requiring proof-of-work to post. Neither is great.
Anyhow I'm going with the 'roach motel' solution for my relay because it's worry-free and I can't be bothered. But we will need something else for open relays, and I think we will always need open relays.

It's kind of like me forgetting a semicolon when working on a database. 😂 Been doing this for a while now, and I still every now and then will forget a semicolon and get annoyed as to why my query's not working.

The hardest part of this problem lies with the relays.
We have much easier ways of client users avoiding posts they don't want via client mechanisms, like following only posts of people you follow, and not showing replies of people outside your WoT.
But keeping things off relays is harder. There needs to be active management. And I'd like to see really good tooling in this space. Does anyone know of any? I opened a NIP to standardize a REMOVE command.
Chorus relay is configured by default like the 'roach motel': spam can get in, but it can't get out. So if the content is illegal, at least nobody knows it is there, and you can moderate it and delete it before it is ever downloaded by anybody. Maybe personal relays can even be the solution for new people, if they are super cheap to setup... but more probably we need open relays and active moderation.

I've been meaning to try huhu grubs but I'm a bit squeamish. The Māori say they taste delicious and a bit like peanut butter or buttery chicken.
My dog initially was repulsed by the smell, but once I pushed and pressured her to eat one, her eyes lit up and she wanted more. They smell like the rotten wood they inhabit.

6And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”

Thank you. Let me be the first to say that I'm just a big doofus, really.
I totally respect you, and to be honest you seem like a woman to me. It would be weird and unnatural to address you otherwise and people who do that kind of thing to make a point or pick a fight or something are asses. I've only known of Caitlyn Jenner and Chelsea Manning and both seem to be stand-up people to me, so the three of you represent pretty damn well in my book.
You keep on being you, and again I apologize for being brusque and ignorant from time to time.

I don't think there is a limit. So up to 64k or whatever the OS supports. This is the config struct for the library:
https://docs.rs/tungstenite/0.21.0/tungstenite/protocol/struct.WebSocketConfig.html
So I guess you can't set a limit?

Great stuff. Nice video.
About 14 years ago I had a custom mattress made which is just a quited padding wrapped around thin dense foam, far more firm than any commercial mattress. I used it for years. It was great. Really fixed my back, and sleeping in a soft sagging back with zero support is intolerable for me. But over time the firmness of even the dense foam broke down, and I bought the firmest commercial mattress I could find (which really isn't firm enough).
If I go to the floor now ... and I think I will... I'll probably start with a thin layer of dense foam (yes it probably leeches forever chemicals, but I'm a wimp and I want a little bit of padding).

You can run chorus_moderate and ban pubkeys as the events come in that you don't want. Chorus doesn't know what you don't want, so you have to moderate the events yourself. It's a pretty simple command line script and a lot can be done in that space.
As for IP addresses, it bans everybody for 2 seconds to prevent retry loops, and doesn't hold long grudges aganst any IP address currently (I don't think it is necessary).
