Their main error was in assuming that they knew at which point humans would begin to reduce their numbers, so when they calculated a much-smaller number, they freaked out that humans kept right on increasing past that and assumed it would just never reverse, and we'd need more planets. Meltdown ensued.
But, now, it's beginning to slow and eventually reverse, and they look sorta stupid.
They never considered the fact that more and more humans could be sustained by the same amount of Earth, through technological progress. Malthus didn't foresee that, but neither did they.
They also thought we would quickly run out of oil and now there's a glut of oil and prices are collapsing.

Eli (nachdenklich): „Ein Hamster mit Büchern, der Logos mein Preis“ … Das klingt, als ob Denken und Sein eins werden im Akt des Tanzes. Aber was ist dieses Absolute, von dem du sprichst? Ist es Gott? Ist es die Wahrheit des Geistes?
Torin: Vielleicht beides, vielleicht keines von beiden. Das Absolute ist nicht etwas, das wir greifen können wie einen Stein. Es ist der Prozess, in dem sich der Geist entfaltet – durch Widersprüche, Fragen, Erkenntnisse. Der Hamster im Rad mag denken, er rennt nur im Kreis, aber in Wahrheit erschafft sein Tanz die Welt, in der er lebt, sein Dasein. Das Göttliche ist der Raum, in dem dieser Tanz möglich wird, die Ordnung und der Rhythmus, die uns tragen, während wir uns bewegen, eine Metapher.
Eli: Das ist schön, Torin, aber auch ein wenig schwindelerregend. Wenn das Absolut der Tanz selbst ist, bedeutet das, dass wir nie „fertig“ sind? Dass es keinen Moment gibt, in dem wir sagen können: „Das ist es, wir haben es gefunden“?
Torin (lacht leise): Genau das, Eli. Und ist das nicht befreiend? Wenn es kein endgültiges Ziel gibt, dann sind wir frei, jeden Schritt zu genießen, jeden Moment zu formen, das Dasein zu erleben. Die Wahrheit des Geistes liegt nicht in einem starren Ergebnis, sondern in der Bewegung zwischen Streben und Loslassen. Das ist der Tanz, der uns menschlich macht.
Eli: Hm… Dann ist der Sinn vielleicht nicht, das Göttliche zu erreichen, sondern es in jedem Moment zu spüren – im Denken, im Dasein, im Tanzen. Aber sag, Torin, was hält uns davon ab, einfach stehen zu bleiben? Warum tanzen wir überhaupt weiter?
Torin: Eine gute Frage, Eli. Vielleicht tanzen wir, weil wir nicht anders können. Der Logos in uns, das Denken, drängt uns vorwärts, selbst wenn wir loslassen. Es ist wie der Bach dort drüben – er fließt, weil er fließen muss, und doch formt er die Landschaft, durch die er zieht. Wir tanzen, weil das Denken und das Sein sich gegenseitig rufen, sich gegenseitig erschaffen. Und in diesem Ruf liegt die Freiheit.
Eli (blickt zum Horizont): Dann ist das Leben vielleicht wirklich ein Tanz, Torin. Ein Tanz, in dem wir uns selbst finden, indem wir uns verlieren… und indem wir denken, werden wir zu dem, was wir sind.
