Yeah, fair enough. I've personally not really found any reason that I need to root my device, but I obviously run Lineage OS on it. With no Google Play services. The only useful thing I did with root when I did use it a long time ago was run network signal guru so that I could force lock bands on my cellular modem.

I think you would find it practically impossible to brick a device. At least what I call a hard brick where it's not at all recoverable. I've fucked up plenty of devices and I've never managed to hard brick a device. You can get into a state I like to refer to as a soft brick, but flashing stock fixes those.

I highly advise against rooting your device as you are completely bypassing the Android security model by doing so. Using a custom ROM and rooting are two totally different things. I don't know if you've ever used Linux before but in Linux you use your standard user for everything except what root is needed for. You do not run as a root all the time and that's for good reason.

If the device is not in that list, that means it is not supported and you absolutely should not attempt it because it will break. The best way to make sure is to look up the device by its code name that it is given internally. Which you can find by asking Wikipedia. As an example, the Motorola One 5G Ace code name was Kiev. If your device is not on that list, then it's not going to happen. And next time you buy a device, take a look at that list first and see what's on it and what isn't. I've learned that's the best way to do it is check the list first and then decide what you want based on that list.

If it's a carrier variant of the device, just forget about it right now because it's not going to happen. Otherwise, have a look at Lineageos.org and see if the device is listed. If it is, they provide great guides on how to do it. But make absolutely certain to follow the instructions step by step. And they recommend reading through the instructions once before following them. And I agree. It's a great thing to read through them first.

This can take so many forms. “Make work” regulations and rules that prevent innovation ultimately hold us back. I heard of one case where a local plumbers group fought to get local building ordinance to require copper pipes which are much more expensive and labor intensive than modern PEX fittings which are basically plug and play.
