This powerful side-by-side comparison shows the same object across a century of history: Anubis’s shrine, discovered in 1922 within the tomb of Tutankhamun, and displayed in 2023 in a museum exhibit.
On the left, the 1922 photo captures the moment of discovery deep within the Valley of the Kings.
The shrine—decorated with a black figure of Anubis, god of mummification and the afterlife—sits among a clutter of treasures and ceremonial objects, still shrouded in ancient dust and mystery. This was the unearthing of one of the most iconic finds in Egyptology, led by Howard Carter, revealing a remarkably intact royal tomb more than 3,000 years old.
On the right, the same shrine gleams under controlled lighting in a modern museum. Now meticulously restored, polished, and revered, it stands not just as a funerary artifact but as a global symbol of ancient Egypt’s grandeur and the evolution of archaeology.
