Bonito Cinesur – South American Film Festival announced its official list of selected films for its third edition last Friday (7). With a curation focused on the encounter between cultures, languages, and territories, the festival reinforces its commitment to the diversity of cinema produced in South America. This year's program includes five competitive sections featuring works from countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Ecuador, as well as co-productions with nations outside the continent. The narratives tackle social, environmental, and existential issues, reflecting the aesthetic and thematic power of contemporary South American cinema – from fiction to animation, from experimental to documentary. Long Films Among the highlights of the main section are the Brazilian films 'The Best Mother in the World' by Anna Muylaert and 'Brasiliana', a musical directed by Joel Zito Araújo. Ecuador is represented by 'Chuzalongo', while the co-production 'Oro Amargo' brings together Chile, Uruguay, and Germany. The selection also includes the Argentine 'Quinografia' and the Peruvian 'Redención'. Short Films The short film section features six titles representative of the multiplicity of forms and narratives: • 'Amor en los tiempos de como sea que se llame el presente' (Colombia) • 'Ayahuanco' (Peru) • 'Desvelo' (Venezuela) • 'La Falta' (Argentina/Uruguay) • 'Lagrimar' (Brazil) • 'Revelación' (Chile) Cinema and Environment The environmental theme, central to the festival, has two specific sections. In the long films, the following were selected: • 'Karuara: The People of the River' (Peru) • 'Kopenawa: Dreaming the Forest' (Brazil) • 'La Cuenca' (Chile) • 'Por el Paraná: The Dispute for the River' (Argentina) • 'Rua do Pescador nº 6' by Bárbara Paz (Brazil) • 'Sinfonia da Sobrevivência' (Brazil) In the short environmental films, the following are part of the program: • 'Insustentável: The Reality of Oil in the Amazon' (Brazil) • 'Sobre a Cabeça os Aviões' (Brazil) • 'Sobre Ruínas' (Brazil) • 'Uma Menina, Um Rio' (Brazil) • 'Jichi: In Search of the Guardian of the Waters' (Bolivia) • 'Por la Tierra' (Argentina) Sul-Mato-Grossense Show Since its creation, Bonito Cinesur has valued creative economy and local talents. The Sul-Mato-Grossense Show brings together six works produced in the state: • 'The Last Gate' • 'Eleonora' • 'Enigmas no Rolê' • 'Jardim de Pedra – Life and Death of Glauce Rocha' • 'Koi and the River' • 'Ocre Tempest' 'The curation of this edition reaffirms our commitment to films that dialogue with the cultural diversity of South America and with the urgencies of our time, always in tune with the territory of Bonito, which inspires and welcomes this encounter between cinema and nature,' highlights the festival director, Nilson Rodrigues. In 2024, Bonito Cinesur screened 42 films over 120 hours of programming and mobilized over 5,000 people between screenings, workshops, debates, and training activities, with a direct impact on the creative economy of the region. About the festival Bonito Cinesur is organized by the Friends of Cinema and Culture Association, in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and with the support of a parliamentary amendment by Deputy Vander Loubet. It is sponsored by Fecomércio, SESC, EMGEA, and ANCINE, and receives institutional support from the Bonito City Hall, the Mato Grosso do Sul Tourism Foundation (FUNDTUR), the SETESC, and the Mato Grosso do Sul State Government. The cultural support comes from Energisa and Zoom Publicidade.
