Yet a closer look at its structure reveals a striking analogy with medieval feudalism, flavored with Roman-era rhetoric. Users are often called "plebs", evoking ancient Rome’s rigid social hierarchy. But how can a modern protocol mirror a 9th-century socio-political system? The answer lies in the "relays"—the nodes transmitting messages. Each #relay operates like an autonomous fiefdom: it sets its own rules, filters content, and decides who gains access. Users—the #plebs—must choose which relay to pledge allegiance to for communication. And while Roman plebs fought for civil rights, digital plebs battle for free speech—often finding themselves exiled to a neighboring fiefdom. Nostr’s decentralized utopia thus resembles a mosaic of micro-dictatorships more than a horizontal democracy.
