Yeah decentralized, open protocols almost never catch on, just like SMTP, RSS, Bitcoin, TCP/IP, BitTorrent and all the other failed ones. 😘
I think you are focused on niche products that had unsustainable foundations, one of many examples like IPFS, which you are correct about. But this, imo, is missing the forest for the trees.
To the contrary of your point, the only things that can be truly universal and practically dominate the entire ecosystem indefinitely (until the next era of massive systemic disruptions arrive), are specifically open decentralized protocols. The limitations of centralized systems are much harder to break through after reaching a certain size, especially when trying to break into unfriendly jurisdictions. Especially when trying to maintain its original purpose.
