In 1948, when the communists targeted monasteries, Bishop Leontie of Rădăuți stood firm. He refused to evict monks from Putna Monastery, declaring, "I will not be the one to throw out monks from Stephen the Great's tomb!" His defiance led to his arrest and imprisonment.
