The Iranian Navy has reportedly claimed that a British destroyer in the North Indian Ocean is assisting by “guiding in Israeli missiles.” However, this assertion appears unfounded. While British warships are present in the region, HMS Middleton and HMS Lancaster—currently in the Persian Gulf—are not destroyers, but rather a minehunter and a frigate, respectively. Both have been stationed there as part of the UK’s long-standing Operation Kipion maritime presence, as confirmed in a recent update from UKForcesTracker.
Other British naval assets are indeed transiting through the broader region, but they are part of a pre-planned deployment to the Indo-Pacific. Moreover, considering Israel’s advanced standoff weaponry and targeting capabilities, it is highly improbable that British ships would be required to guide Israeli strikes. Iran’s claim appears to be an attempt to frame recent reports of the UK increasing its regional force posture—as directed by the British prime minister—as justification for earlier threats to target U.S. and allied assets if they are seen to support Israel’s air and missile defense operations.
