The theme for the coming Sunday mornings is The Master’s Recipe for effective Praying.
Today we are talking about, Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Text
Matthew 6:9 NKJV
9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Scripture Reading
Luke 11:1-13 NKJV
The Model Prayer
1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father]in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”
A Friend Comes at Midnight
5 And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves;
6 for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;
7 and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’?
8 I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.
Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking
9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?
12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Introduction.
The Lord's prayer is a useful guide for disciples to follow in their prayer life.
It gives us some priorities by which to establish our prayer life.
Most of us have quoted this presence childhood, but we may not have fully looked carefully at what it really says.
What should be the primary burden of your prayer when you approach the heavenly Father?
In this prayer, Jesus set forth seven petitions.
The first three are concerned with the things of God.
The last four concerned with the things of man.
This reflects God's priorities that should be observed in prayer.
The first petition is hallowed be thy name.
The biblical use of name is a little strange to modern minds.
In understanding the Bible, you cannot separate the name from the person.
Name is character so far is it revealed.
To hallow something means to count it as Holy.
Literally, it means “to make holy.”
Since it is related to God in this text, we know that it carries the force here of regarding or acknowledging something that is holy.
There is no way that the name of God can be made holy, for He is the eternal Holy One.
A petition for a revelation of God.
Spirit of the petition.
While this first petition is voiced as a specific, urgent appeal, it has beneath it a confession.
Only reason we would be moved to pray for God's name to be hallowed would be because it was not currently been done.
Humankind is guilty of not regarding God as holy and of treating His name as a common, ordinary thing.
We must confess that there are times when we show little regard the name of God and times when we represent His name is a very common thing.
What about the burden of the petition?
It is primarily through this petition the God will make Himself known, that God will confront people with the truth about Himself.
This is a petition that God will reveal Himself to people as He revealed Himself to Moses at the burning bush and Isaiah in the temple.
The conviction behind this petition is that only such a knowledge of God can meet the deepest needs of humanity.
This first petition is not that people may have the strength to do what is right, but rather that they may know God.
The conviction is that if people can come to know God, all of these other needs will be cared for in their lives.
Humankind’s deepest problem is ignorance of God.
Though the evidence for God is all about them and God desires to make himself known, people still live in ignorance.
We see this priority in the prayers of Paul for himself and for others.
He was moved to pray that “I may know him, and the power of his resurrection.”
He longed for a deeper and full on knowledge of God in his life.
He prayed for other Christians they might be “filled with all the fullness of God.”
This should also be the priority in our prayers for others.
- A petition for a recognition of God.
This petition goes deeper than that people may know God is holy.
They must not only know what Moses, Isaiah, and Peter knew, they must do what these men did.
When they knew God is holy, they responded to Him accordingly.
This is a missionary petition.
As we look upon the world in its sin electrons, no prayer is more appropriate than a petition the God may be known acknowledge by sinful human beings.
It should be the passion of every Christian heart to see God reverenced by the nations of the earth.
This is also a personal petition.
We must also pray, hallowed be your name in my life.
Will be powerless and seeing God's name hallowed in the earth until it is first Hallowed in us.
But what does this involve?
Our lips should speak the name of God with a sense of awe and reference.
If we really know who He is, we should speak of Him accordingly.
The old Testament people of God had such a respect for the name of God, such an awareness of His holiness, that they would not write His name and were even reluctant to speak it.
They often spoke of him simply as “the name.”
This stands in sharp contrast to the irreverence and familiarity that has crept into our lives.
Some speak of God flippantly and even use His name was blasphemously.
Some constantly use God’s name to call down curses on people and things when God does not act that way, and these are people who call themselves Christians.
Petition also include your personal thoughts.
Irreverent and speech begins with irreverent thoughts.
The mouth can only speak what has been conceived in the heart.
What are your thoughts of God?
This would include those secret thoughts you would not openly express.
Do you have a resentment towards God?
Do you resent his claims on your life?
Do you insist on having your own way rather than following his way?
This petition is the God maybe reverenced, acknowledged, and adored in your heart.
It is a prayer that in your heart there will be nothing except submission, adoration, and praise toward God.
The more, the petition hallowed be thy name includes our personal conduct.
The conduct of our daily lives can be a blasphemy of the Name just as a speech can.
Paul levelled such a charge against Israel of his day.
What is your conduct saying about God to those who watch you?
Is it speaking to them of a God of love, kindness, truth, and honesty?
Or is it suggesting that God means very little to you? Does your conduct say to the world that God is worth knowing?
Conclusion.
Jesus felt that the petition “hallowed be thy name” should always be the urgent appeal appeal to people.
He knows our needs better than we could ever know them, and he said that the greatest need is to know God and a walk day by day with river and awareness of him in everything we do.
This can be so in your life if you give this petition proper priority in your prayers.
