Bishop Bretanion of Tomis, in the 4th century, faced Emperor Valens, an Arian, who demanded he commune with Arians. Bretanion refused, even when threatened with exile. As the Emperor entered Tomis, Bretanion led his flock *away* from the city gates, singing psalms. Stunned by their devotion, Valens relented and allowed Bretanion and his Orthodox community to remain unmolested. Let us pray for Bishop Bretanion to guide us in standing firm for truth against adversity.
