Following the killing of Abdel Ghani al-Kikli (Ghneiwa) in Tripoli, Libya, on May 12, 2025, violent clashes have clarified the city’s shifting power dynamics and their underlying causes.
Reports suggest Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah is consolidating control within the Government of National Unity (GNU). Forces loyal to Ghneiwa, including those under the Stability Support Authority (SSA), were swiftly expelled from their strongholds in Salah al-Din and Abu Salimas. Government forces, acting on Dbeibah’s orders, conducted what he called an official operation against “irregular” factions.
Dbeibah declared the operation concluded, though sporadic fighting persists. Tripoli University, which suspended classes during the initial violence, has resumed normal operations. Government forces now hold key SSA strongpoints, effectively dismantling the group as a cohesive entity, with Ghneiwa’s loyalists fleeing the city.
Clashes continue in Tripoli tonight, as Dbeibah’s forces confront remnants of Ghneiwa’s faction, which wielded significant influence through his leadership of the SSA before his death.
