France has announced plans to build a massive high-security prison in the Amazon rainforest. The facility will be constructed in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, French Guiana, at a cost of €400 million—around R$2.5 billion. Designed to hold up to 500 inmates, the prison will house some of France’s most violent criminals.
Fun fact: Anyone who’s read the book Papillon or seen the film will recognize Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni as the former entry port to Devil’s Island—the infamous penal colony that operated from 1850 to 1950. Over 70,000 prisoners were sent there during its century of use, with many dying in the harsh prison conditions.
Another interesting detail: While France is a European nation, its longest land border is actually with… Brazil!
