A federal judge in the United States determined on Wednesday to grant conditional freedom to a Russian scientist who worked at Harvard University, who fled Russia due to fear of political persecution and was a target of deportation by the Trump administration. Kseniia Petrova, a researcher at Harvard Medical School, was arrested by US Customs and Border Protection agents in February at Boston's airport when returning from a trip to Paris. She was accused of failing to declare biological samples she was carrying in her luggage. US authorities informed her that her visa had been revoked and she would be deported to Russia. Later, she was transferred to a detention center operated by ICE in Louisiana. Judge Christina Reiss of the Vermont federal court ordered ICE to release the scientist before a future decision on her visa. On May 14, criminal charges were filed against Petrova for smuggling, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. We demonstrated in the hearing that Kseniia is not a danger to society, does not pose a flight risk, and should not be in an immigration detention center, said her lawyer, Greg Romanovsky, in a statement after the judicial decision. Now, the Russian scientist must be taken back to Boston to await a new hearing on her detention, this time due to smuggling charges.
