Just to note, I haven’t read leviathan yet, I wanted to watch this first to get an idea of what to expect. I agree with the professor, that Hobbs was a man of his time 🫂
Ah man, heavy question. I hope what I say makes sense 😭. I believe in individual sovereignty. That being said, I know it’s a tricky subject, there are too many irrational people wondering about, unable to govern themselves. I believe in natural law, but I can see both sides of the coin - why people of that time might have wanted more strict control. But I also don’t think any body of humans should be given absolute power over other humans. Feels bizarre to me.
I read that Hobbes had a different definition of natural law than Thomas Aquinas. When I pick natural law I’m referring to Aquinas’s definition, though it may seem idealistic to think every human has the ability to be so rational - but I don’t know too much about either man and their philosophies yet 🫂 I will though
