I would personally rank silver above gold for real-world trade value in a shit hit the fan situation.
Always get the smallest most pure forms you can.
Old silver coins (not sure about where you are but in Australia the coins before 1940s have I think 97% silver while the coins after that have I think only 50% silver (just from my memory)
For gold you want simple rings or chains.
Stay away from gold bars, very easy to gold plate lead bar and unless you're buying something really big there is no reason you'd ever need bars.
