2023-04-21 08:17:16I am aware that my words are not always politically correct, but I embraced bitcoin and nostr precisely because of its free and resilient spirit. I am a free soul and so are my words.
I have been using Damus continuously for 6 months (how time goes by!) and I have always been a happy user and I have felt that the program evolved in a coherent way within what I "sense" the community is asking for.
Also in the last few weeks I have seen how we have received some updates, which in my opinion, have not been well thought out before launching them.
The responsibility acquired when many people start using your tools is huge, there are two ways to approach this, the first one, and I saw this a lot in open source projects in the early 2000's, is to consider the project as your own and therefore if you don't like what I do, make a fork. The second, which defines more my way of thinking, is to consider the project as something that was never yours, but from the beginning it was always something free and for the whole community (if its license is open source obviously, I'm not talking about proprietary projects).
This last update of Damus, for me has meant my first frontal rejection to a feature, that in my way of seeing things, goes absolutely against the freedom of the user, forcing him to monetize many of their social interactions.
In my opinion, a social network, social protocol, communication protocol or whatever you want to call it, must emulate in the virtual world the interactions that we have been doing offline for 100,000 year ago. And honestly, I don't pay pennies every time I agree with a friend or family member's way of thinking, but I give them a hug, express my support or simply give them a smile.
Monetizing every interaction is a fatal mistake, discouraging new users to interact with others and forcing others to "ground" every interaction towards the material, earthly and outside the "emotional" realm?
This is not a criticism to Damus developers, I'm sure they have done it with the best intentions, but I think, and this is just an opinion of one more user, that this kind of decisions should be agreed before, maybe via polls? 😜
