i am just reading this back again because someone reposted and reacted, and realising that there is a specific case also for consortium style decentralised relay networks, that the subscriptions would obey the same rules for "privileged" event kinds such as DMs, in that they would not forward these to a replica that is not identified as also property of the archive relay that stores these events.
this does complicate the architecture a bit, but it's more or less necessary for privacy protected relay service. for these cases, and they are relatively small number, the clients would have to use other relays exactly precisely for just inbox/outbox relay connections *for these types of events only*.
because they are private messages, and application data, that's fine, as these are queries that are relatively low bandwidth anyway. just making the note to remember that this would need to be a feature for authed access to such events, that would not propagate as public events via subscriptions.
