I don't know if the people zapping and boosting and quoting and donating are aware of how strongly they influence the development. Even when they just rant and complain, people listen and often feel compelled to respond in some way.
People sometimes think these are the Stupid People, who give money and clout and energy away for nothing, but if you can shift a feature -- or even a roadmap -- by saying, "It would be nice if it did this. This is very important to me. *big zap*", then all the lurkers and freeloaders end up running software that works the way you want it to work.
It's not even overt, it's just that everyone building can remember what you said because you really got their attention. Developers are a mixture of artists and engineers. They're not building their best stuff for a sea of blank faces.
They want to deliver so that That One Person sees that they really built it.
