A purely economic focused third party doesn't win primarily because of Social issues.
People don't like the thought of being unable to change or affect social policy as well even if voting for the hypothetical economics party increased their general well being.
The alternative problem with an economic focused 3rd party is any indifference, or neutrality on social issues just comes across as pandering.
Also most people don't understand economics, they only understand feelings.
They want how they feel appeased, not their life to improve.
