John Webber (1751–1793)
• Claim to fame: First known European artist to visually document surfing.
• Notable work: “A View of KaraKakooa, in Owyhee” (published 1784)
In this etching, Webber captured native Hawaiians riding waves on wooden boards — possibly the first known Western artwork of surfing.

• Context: During Cook’s stop in Hawai‘i (then called the Sandwich Islands), the crew witnessed the native sport of wave-riding. Webber’s drawings helped introduce the rest of the world to surfing as a cultural practice.
So, in the historical sense, John Webber is the original surf artist. His work bridges the first known visual record of surfing in Western art.
