This photo, taken in 1927, shows an amazing scene: an infant being breastfed directly by a goat.
Today this may come as a shock. But back then, it was sometimes a matter of survival.
Before infant milk, accessible hospitals or breast milk banks arrived, families had to improvise with the means of curb.
Cow's milk, too rich, was poorly tolerated by infants. Goat milk, lighter, closer to human milk, then became the only solution when a mother couldn't breastfeed.
A woman tells a story:
"My mother was born premature, in 1942, on an isolated farm. There was no doctor, no phone.
Neighborhood goat fed her. She often says that milk made her strong.... And a little stubborn too.
"
For a long time, animals didn't just feed humans.
They sometimes saved their children.
Simple stories.
But deeply human.
