Consumers would be notified of AI-generated content under Pennsylvania bill
==========
Pennsylvania state representatives have approved a bill requiring that consumers be notified when artificial intelligence is used to generate content. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Chris Pielli, would change the state's Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law to require "clear and conspicuous disclosure" when AI has been used to create written text, images, audio, or video. The notice would have to be displayed when the content is first shown to consumers. The bill also prohibits defendants from arguing that child sexual abuse material created by AI isn't illegal. The bill is opposed by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, which believes it could expose businesses to civil litigation. Public disclosure of AI's use is an emerging theme in state bills across the US. TechNet, a trade group for tech companies, hopes to work with lawmakers to clarify the definition of AI and decrease uncertainty about who and what is affected.
