SECRETS OF THE SISTINE CHAPEL: HOW POPES ARE REALLY CHOSEN.
White smoke = new pope.
Black smoke = not yet.
But what REALLY goes on behind the Vatican’s most mysterious doors?
Here’s the untold story of how popes are actually chosen — beyond the Latin chants and chimney puffs:

What is a Conclave?
It’s the ancient, highly secretive process where cardinals elect the next pope. The word conclave comes from cum clave — meaning “with a key.” As in, they’re literally locked in until they decide.

Why Lock the Cardinals In?
To prevent outside influence, lobbying, or even gossip. This tradition started in the 13th century when frustrated locals actually locked cardinals inside to speed things up. It stuck.

Inside the Vote:
Each cardinal writes one name on a paper ballot. After each round, votes are counted, burned, and accompanied by a chant. A two-thirds majority is needed to elect a pope. Yes, it’s that old school.

The Smoke Signals:
Black smoke means no consensus yet. White smoke signals a successful election. Today, Vatican staff add special chemicals to the ballot fires to make the color clear for the thousands watching below.

Why It Takes Time:
Choosing a pope isn’t like picking a class president. It can take days—or weeks—especially if factions within the Church disagree. The longest conclave in history? 2 years and 9 months (1274).

“Habemus Papam!”
Latin for “We have a pope!” This announcement is made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by the reveal of the new pope’s name. It’s a moment that sends chills across the globe.
