I have no idea what the splits are, but I would guess that you're right and a lot of people at festivals use drugs to escape, however I think there is a remnant of psychonauts who, wittingly or not, are walking the path of the Medicine Man.
There are some benefits to using psychedelics like the development of magnetoreceptive vision, treatment of PTSD, cessation of "bad habits", and more.
Like any tool, the merits of the tool do not depend upon the user of the tool. The merits of the tool depend upon the proper application of the tool.
