since we lived, then, where Starbucks ruled, my dd wanted to hold off, and make having her first cup a proper coming of age ritual, by waiting to do her virgin cup at the very first one downtown.
I don't think she wanted it that much, iirc it didn't happen that way.
to answer re: when to start? don't make "when" a big fuss, let their curious interest drive the experiment with tastes first. if their first youthful cup is straight-black, they prolly need to be really motivated to stick with the bitter thrill, but not so if their first one is enticingly sweet like a soda.
great opportunity to steer their future, if that's your role...
