The Military Justice of the Union in São Paulo convicted nine people for the theft and commercialization of large-caliber weapons from the Barueri War Arsenal, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. According to the Justice, four of the convicted were military personnel from the Brazilian Army and five were civilians. The crimes occurred on September 7, 2023, Independence Day of Brazil, when the military unit was closed. The absence of the weapon, which was stored at the War Arsenal in Barueri, was only identified on October 10 during an inspection. At the time, the Army reported that 21 machine guns were missing, 13 of which were .50 caliber, capable of bringing down aircraft, and eight 7.62 caliber. The lieutenant colonel who commanded the War Arsenal at the time of the facts was convicted of 6 months' suspension of duty. According to the indictment filed by the Military Public Ministry, this lieutenant colonel was negligent in failing to comply with Army regulations. The names of the convicted were not disclosed. In addition to them, five civilians were convicted of illegal arms trafficking. One of them received a sentence of 14 years, 4 months, and 24 days in prison. The others received sentences of 18 years in prison, all in closed regime. They were also fined. The theft investigation found that on September 7, the two sergeants of the Army broke the padlocks and seal of the storage room where the weapons were kept, and then disabled the alarm at the location. They then put the weapons in a truck and left the location without being searched. All the stolen weapons were delivered to civilians, who passed them on to members of criminal organizations in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. During the investigation, 20 of the 22 stolen weapons were recovered. On October 19, 2023, the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police found eight weapons in the Gardênia Azul neighborhood, abandoned in a car. On November 1, two machine guns were found in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood, also in the capital. On October 21, police found nine weapons in the midst of the São Roque (SP) forest, after a confrontation with criminals. Two machine guns are still missing.
