The myth of the entire franchise appeals to me. Chronicles is one of my favorites. I think there is something more than the surface story in it. It is like how a house in dreams means your self. Cameron tapped in. It is not the heroes journey. It is something different. There is something lurking in back of this, an understanding that our unconscious mind has.
There was another movie that came out around the same time, Buckaroo Banzai. I was selling PC compatibles and CP/M computers near a theater that showed it for 99 cents. I watched it three days in a row after work. [ Talk about unbridled technological optimism! ] The black Lectroids threaten to trigger a nuclear war if we didn't control the red Lectroids (keep Lord John Worfin from escaping our dimension into the eighth). The exoteric and esoteric are meeting, now. We saw it coming. It is emerging. Your cartoon captures this.
