I self host everything and have a wireguard concoction to connect it all together but I don't enjoy being a full-time devops and don't think it is scalable to the masses. I want to invest my time in tech solutions that can be made adoptable by the masses without any compromise to their security, privacy, and freedom of speech, which are all under attack.
When anonymous login is accepted and it's end to end encrypted, the counterparty risk is limited to rug pull, in which case you just move to another provider. But if that comes with Big Tech surveillance and metadata harvesting then it's a no go.
