Spam is in the eye of the beholder. That’s the crux of this whole debate actually.
To me, the defining characteristic of spam is that it’s cheap to produce and sent to recipients who don’t want it. Like email spam.
But whether something “is spam” is a classic categorical question. Is a hamburger a sandwich? People will debate definitional questions like this endlessly and to no avail.
To me, it doesn’t matter what you call a transaction. Transactors pay for the privilege. That’s the spam deterrent.
