When it comes down to skills, tell him to focus on the Shot Preparation phase of the Save Process.
The Save Process consists of three distinct phases:
Shot Preparation
Save Execution
Post-Save Response
The Shot Preparation encompasses everything that occurs before a shot on net is taken. It involves goalies optimizing their positioning to facilitate their potential save attempt.
The Save Execution is the timeframe from when a shot is released on net to when the goaltender makes the save. This phase begins at the shot release and ends as soon as the goalie stops it. It is the shortest of the three phases, and the one where goalies spend the least amount of time.
The Post-Save Response is the goaltender’s recovery after the initial save attempt. While the Shot Preparation focuses on establishing position, the Post-Save Response phase focuses on regaining position.
At the core of each phase of the Save Process is the concept of position. The stronger a goaltender’s position is, the more likely they are to make a save.
At his age, the goalies who are best at putting themselves in position will always play on the top teams.
General tip: If he genuinely loves being a goalie, encourage him to chase it as far as he can.
There’s no lifestyle quite like being an NHL player. People will try to talk him out of it by saying things like:
“There are only 62 goalie spots in the NHL.”
“There are fewer NHL goalies than S&P 500 CEOs.”
Sure, it’s tough. But someone has to do it... so why not you?
