Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinol)
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance synthesized in the body that serves as a cofactor for mitochondrial enzyme complexes and oxidative phosphorylation and the production of ATP that helps convert food into energy.
CoQ10 functions as an antioxidant, something that protects your cells against damage that can lead to inflammation, atherosclerosis, and even cancer.
CoQ10 can be used after heart attack, and congestive heart failure, with hypertension, with hyperlipidemia, with statin treatment, with diabetes, with periodontal disease.
CoQ10 may also help with Parkinson's disease, prevent migraines, improve male fertility, and improve immune function in people with HIV.
Sources of CoQ10: Oily fish, organ meats, and whole grains. Supplement: 30 to 200 mg BID. CoQ10 medication Interactions: Can enhance antihypertensive effect, may make warfarin and clopidogrel less effective. Medications that lower CoQ10 levels in the body include: Statins, gemfibrozil, beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants to name a few.
