The Hidden Cost of “Cheap” Clothes
Why inflation destroys quality, dignity, and meaning — not just money.
Clothing is one of the clearest examples.
Today, everything seems “accessible”:
— T-shirts for $5,
— sneakers on clearance,
— fast fashion with a new collection every season.
But behind this illusion of abundance are:
— throwaway products that fall apart after 5 washes,
— slave-like labor in faraway factories where people work 16-hour days for cents,
— and massive environmental damage, as tons of clothes end up in landfills because it’s cheaper to dump than to repair or recycle.
Inflation advocates say: “At least there’s no shortage — we have access to everything.”
But that’s not wealth — it’s excessive consumption of low-quality junk.
And those “rising wages” they boast about? Mostly nominal — real purchasing power and product quality have declined.
In the past, clothes were made to last, repaired, and even passed down — because they retained value, just like the labor behind them.
Today, everything is disposable — things, time, effort.
Inflationary money creates inflationary culture: cheap, short-lived, throwaway — including work, relationships, and even meaning.
