2023-11-13 14:47:23There was a significant amount of AI-related news emerging last week from Silicon Valley companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Company X. The first notable development was Gork, a new AI initiative from Twitter and Company X, designed to utilize Twitter data extensively. Additionally, OpenAI made headlines with its announcement of Custom GPT models. However, these developments seem to be following a similar, potentially outdated playbook.
These companies continue to operate under a closed-source model, creating what some might describe as 'walled gardens.' This approach restricts user access and control over the AI technologies and raises concerns about transparency and inclusivity. The lack of clarity regarding the usage of personal data by these AI systems is another critical issue. With increasing awareness and concern about data privacy, the vague policies of these companies regarding personal data handling can lead to user distrust and skepticism.
Why is this time different, and how is Nostr the linchpin in building a real open AI platform? Over the past year, we have developed many Nostr clients to emulate existing social media apps. Now, it's time to create something new, demonstrating its distinctiveness and necessity.
Why Open Source & Private Large Language Models (LLMs): To understand why open source LLMs are essential, one must first comprehend the nature of language models. Fundamentally, these models are extensive neural networks trained on vast amounts of text. Their primary function is to predict the next word in a sequence, based on the observed patterns in the training data. They do not "think" or "feel" in the conventional sense. Instead, they generate text based on learned patterns.
These simple questions are within LLMs' capabilities: “What is the capital of France?” “Write me a paragraph about how automobiles work.”
However, these questions require the user to provide the necessary data and prompt engineering:
“Can you find an Italian restaurant in the suburbs of Washington D.C., which also serves vegetarian options and is open until 12 AM?” “Can you devise a vacation plan to Dubai based on my personal history of hotels I’ve stayed at, availability, pricing, and other places to visit according to my preferences?”
Essentially, you need your personal data to derive real value, but simultaneously, you must keep that data private, encrypted, and prevent it from being used by others for training purposes.
This is the reason behind NIP-90 - Data Vending Machines, and the latest merged PR for encrypting prompts and user data.
Why AI Agents? OpenAI has released functionality to build custom GPTs (also known as AI agents). We may already have custom AI agents on Nostr through PlebAI, released back in October. Refer to this article here.
Each AI agent possesses its unique instructions, knowledge, and actions it can perform. This eliminates the need for specific system prompts to receive responses.
