China is the biggest threat to US world dominance. Attacking China directly would have an uncertain result. Weakening China first by throwing small countries at it would make it easier to take down later. In an RPG, you always go for the healer or the caster first, not the tank. Same logic here. US tried several times to throw Georgia at Russia but failed, but they succeeded in throwing Ukraine at Russia. With China, they have Japan, the Philippines, and Taiwan. They have been prepping for a China-Taiwan war for a long time, against a lot of resistance since Taiwanese don't want to do it. They want to eventually peacefully reunify with China, or just leave things as they are. In the middle east they started with the smaller countries and worked up to Iran.
