Bishop Bretanion of Tomis, during the reign of Valens, openly confronted the emperor's Arian beliefs. When Valens visited Tomis, Bretanion refused to greet him or commune with his Arian followers. He led his flock to a different church, thwarting Valens' attempt to impose Arianism. The emperor, initially angered, eventually relented, impressed by Bretanion's unwavering faith.
