In 460 AD, Monk Tanyao initiated a monumental project to carve five colossal Buddha caves into Wuzhou Mountain, marking the inception of the Yungang Grottoes. The statues in the Tanyao Five Caves feature majestic proportions, full and rounded faces, prominent noses, deep-set eyes, and broad shoulders—masterfully blending the artistic essence of the Gandhara and Mathura styles from ancient India.
