This series is a study from the Psalms, in which the psalmist gives voice to prayers that resound in our hearts today.
Today we are discussing, The Prayers of a Depressed Saint.

Psalm 13:1 NKJV
Trust in the Salvation of the Lord
1 How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?\ How long will You hide Your face from me?

1 How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?\ How long will You hide Your face from me?
2 How long shall I take counsel in my soul,\ Having sorrow in my heart daily?\ How long will my enemy be exalted over me?
3 Consider and hear me, O Lord my God;\ Enlighten my eyes,\ Lest I sleep the sleep of death;
4 Lest my enemy say,\ “I have prevailed against him”;\ Lest those who trouble me rejoice when I am moved.
5 But I have trusted in Your mercy;\ My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
6 I will sing to the Lord,\ Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
Introduction.
The Psalms present a record of the life of God’s people in all of its dimensions.
In the Psalms, we find high worship experiences in which praise is being offered to God, but we also find sorrow and grief.
We find perplexing questions and expressions of faith.
But we also find expressions of despair.
Psalm 13, for instance, presents the prayer of a man in deep depression.
Today we know that depression can be the result of many different factors.
Some people have a tendency toward depression due to hereditary factors.
Others experience deep depression because of a chemical imbalance.
Depression may be caused by someone close.
It may be because of a negative way of thinking.
Depression is often the result of weariness and physical exhaustion.
Some experience depression because of utter helplessness.
Depression can accompany illness.
Others experience depression as death approaches.
All of us experience some depression because of impatience.
Devine chastisement is also a cause for depression.
Maybe this was the reason David was depressed and wrote this psalm.
- A prayer during a time of depression.
Have you ever prayed to God when it seemed He had forgotten you?
Does God really forget His children?
Have you ever prayed when it seemed God had turned his face away from you?
The psalmist was depressed by the length of the suffering he was experiencing in his soul.
The psalmist was so depressed that he experienced sorrow in his heat throughout the day.
The psalmist was depressed because of the victory of his enemy over him.
Many have experienced depression because of the victory of satan over them.
2. A cry for help while in a state of depression.
It is exceedingly difficult to pray effectively when we are in the depths of despair, suffering the pains of depression.
Nevertheless, we may need to pray a prater of confession nd ask for cleansing.
The psalmist continued to pry even in his despair.
In times like these, we need to study God’s word and recognise our relationship to Him and continue to come before Him as needs children.
3. The faith of the psalmist in depression.
The psalmist was able to continue to trust in the steadfast love of God.
Many times a person suffering depression finds it impossible to believe that god continues to love them.
The psalmist had faith believe that he would yet rejoice in the great salvation of God.
Perhaps the psalmist had this assurance because he believed that God would forgive him and cleanse him.
The psalmist decided to sing unto the Lord because he was confident that God would deal bountifully and graciously with him.
Conclusion.
Depression in one form or another will be the experience of us all somewhere along the road of life.
Depression must be dealt with or we will live a life of misery.
God is good.
He loves us.
He works for good in everything that life brings us.
If our depression is due to the discipline of our heavenly Father, let us rejoice rather than be discouraged.
Let us look up because something good is going to happen.
