He was an American actor, comedian, writer, and filmmaker. He was mainly known for his comedic roles, including his portrayal of Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971).

He died from complications of Alzheimer's disease on August 29, 2016, at the age of 83.
