Walk The Dinosaur 🎶 by Was (Not Was)
Behind the catchy beat of "Walk the Dinosaur" lies a fascinating story of musical contrast and hidden meaning.

When Was (Not Was) released this funky, horn-driven dance track in 1987, few realized they were actually grooving to a song about nuclear apocalypse. The deceptively upbeat tune featuring that iconic cowbell would take a surprising journey through pop culture, becoming a global hit in two distinct waves of popularity.
The song's success followed an unusual timeline, first breaking into the UK Top 10 in 1987 before taking nearly two years to climb to #7 on the US Billboard charts in 1989. This delayed success came largely through MTV's heavy rotation of the music video, which featured cavewomen dancers and Flintstones-inspired visuals that completely recontextualized the song's serious undertones into a lighthearted dance craze.
Co-writer Randy Jacobs later revealed the stark disconnect between the song's reception and its intended meaning: what audiences embraced as a feel-good dance anthem was actually a metaphorical warning about nuclear destruction. This duality showcases the Detroit-based band's signature approach of wrapping serious messages in accessible, genre-blending packages.
Was (Not Was), formed in 1979 by David Weiss and Don Fagenson (who adopted the stage names David Was and Don Was), built their reputation on musical experimentation and collaboration. "Walk the Dinosaur" represented their commercial breakthrough moment, though the band would continue creating their eclectic brand of music through the early 1990s before taking an extended hiatus, eventually returning with their album "Boo!" in 2008.
