Every year brings a new adventure.
Sometimes it's wild, sometimes it's weird, and sometimes... it's unexpectedly adorable.
One fall, the road took a surprising turn when we stumbled upon a couple of dehydrated, lethargic baby squirrels—so desperate they’d climbed out of their nest and lay sprawled in the open. We waited for their mother, but hours passed, and the brutal truth set in: they’d been alone too long. At that point, a hawk was more likely to show up than help.
Or, more to the point, WE were the help.
So we stepped in.
For a few chaotic, heart-melting months, we became squirrel foster parents—feeding, cleaning, and watching these little fuzzballs regain strength and personality. Even after we released them, we stuck around, helping them adjust to life in the wild. Eventually, like all things in our travels, it was time to move on.
But I still think about those little guys. And I’ll never see a squirrel play without smiling.
At least I have the pictures.
