yes, open membership means there is always a privacy vulnerability. direct messages can only be breached by one out of two but the more you put on the denominator the lower the chances of keeping it private
IMO, it's a fool's errand, outside of the business or affinity group context. better to make it public to read, auth to write, then you can control spam simply by whitelists, which are much cheaper to implement than blacklists and complex shit like spam recognisers.
