Of course, in ancient Latin, the word "sinister" was coined to refer to people who were left-handed, and folklore in many cultures suggested that lefties had the mark of Satan. So, maybe that original perception of lefties is why so many of these supposed ne’er-do-wells wound up gravitating to what was originally called the "devil’s music" by its detractors. At the very least, that could provide some explanation for Tony Iommi's guitar tone. As you click through, you'll read about how these musicians coped with learning how to play when left-handed instruments were difficult to come by. Some had to re-string their instruments or set up their drum kits differently to accommodate their orientation, while others simply turned their guitars around and learned how to play upside-down. As a result, there are some left turns in store, too. You'll find a few surprises -- like Duane Allman, Phil Collins and Joe Perry -- to go along with more famous figures like Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain. But before we end up out in left field, let’s start handing out some left-handed compliments to our favorite left-handed rock stars. ✔ Duane Allman For decades, guitarists around the planet have been trying to emulate the signature sound of Duane Allman’s slide playing. From picking up Gibson Les Pauls to purchasing vintage glass pill bottles on eBay, there are no limits some will go to in order to nail that sound. In the end however, musicianship really boils down to the motion and feel of the fingers, and being a lefty who played right handed, there had to have been some mental discombobulation at play that might just make Skydog’s tone forever out of reach. ✔ David Bowie Bowie went through a myriad of personal changes throughout his long and storied career, but his first was his shift from a lefty to a right-handed guitar player. Rather than by choice, like so many of his other late-stage persona transitions, the ambidextrous change came about completely out of circumstance. There were simply not enough left-handed guitars at the shops of post-war Great Britain. ✔ Bun E. Carlos It’s fair to say that Cheap Trick wouldn’t have been Cheap Trick if not for the rhythm and flair of their erstwhile percussionist, Bun E. Carlos. The mark of any good drummer, of course, is versatility, and while Carlos always sounded incredible behind the kit, it’s even more amazing to learn that he could pound it out either right handed or left. ✔ Kurt Cobain In Nirvana's early days, Kurt Cobain often had to rely on cheap right-handed guitars from pawn shops and re-string them because he couldn't afford a new left-handed model. But with his success came the opportunity to get left-handed Fender Jaguars and Mustangs direct from the manufacturer. He eventually worked with Fender to create a hybrid of the two models that was called the "Jag-Stang." ✔ Phil Collins The Genesis drummer and solo star placed his kit backward so that the snare and kick drum would be where they felt natural to him. However, Phil Collins worked his left hand and arm so hard that he suffered neurological damage to that limb a several years ago and underwent surgery. ✔ Stewart Copeland Stewart Copeland was the man responsible for laying down the classic, reggae/ska beat that propelled the Police into the stratosphere in the ‘80s. What most people don’t know is that he did it all while playing opposite of his natural left-handed tendency. "I play instruments right-handed; it's just more convenient that way,” he told Music Radar. “Like most left-handed people, I am close to being fully ambidextrous." ✔ Billy Corgan The Smashing Pumpkins singer and guitarist has always styled himself as a social outcast and being a left-hander certainly must add to that self-perception. Despite all his rage, the urge to fit in is a strong one – and just like so many other musicians on our list, Corgan denied his lefty heritage and plays guitar in the standard right-side dominant style. ✔ Elliot Easton While some left-handers were able to learn to play guitar right-handed, that wasn’t the case for young Elliot Easton – who grew up to co-found the Cars. Easton first tried to learn on a cheap plastic guitar, but realized he would have an easier time if he got someone to flip around the instrument’s nut and strings. As he got better, he scrounged and saved for the much more rare left-handed Telecasters and Les Pauls. By the time the Cars had scored their first hit album, it was easier for Elliot to get his left hand on just what he needed. In the days since, Easton has continued to collect new and vintage left-handed axes. ✔ Robert Fripp Many people might consider learning to play the guitar right-handed as a lefty to be an obstacle to overcome, but then again King Crimson's leader isn’t most people. For Fripp, the challenge became an opportunity and he has credited it with helping achieve his own, distinctive style. “I work on the assumption that you have two hands, so why not use each of them,” he once told Guitar Player. ✔ Jimi Hendrix There’s not a more famous left-handed rock star than Jimi Hendrix. The guitar god wrote with his right hand, but when it came to playing, he found that he was more naturally inclined to switch things up. His father, Al, would have none of this (again that whole “sinister,” “devil” thing), so Jimi secretly restrung his right-handed axe so that the strings went the other way. He would play it lefty when his dad wasn’t there and righty when he was. It turns out that once you learn to play a guitar either way, strumming it behind your head or plucking it with your teeth isn’t too difficult. ✔ Tony Iommi You couldn’t do a lefty list without the Black Sabbath riff-meister, whose left-handed playing sounded as sinister as the old wives believed it would. Of course, dealing with the stigma of being a left-handed guitarist was nothing compared to overcoming a serious injury Iommi suffered at a sheet metal factory, resulting in the loss of part of the fingers on his right hand (the ones he used to form notes on the neck of his guitar, as a lefty). The Gibson SG-wielding metal legend worked around the disability to create a snarling, sludgy roar that has been inspiring guitarists ever since. ✔ Mark Knopfler The greatest compliment you can ever pay a musician is to laud them for creating their own signature sound. Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler is certainly a figure worthy of such distinction, and he credits his left hand for helping him develop his own unique tone. “It obviously means my strong hand is on the neck for a good vibrato,” he once said. “I can pull or bend three strings all at the same time quite easily.” ✔ Paul McCartney The story goes that when Paul was first handed a guitar (a right-handed model, naturally), he couldn’t manage to make much noise with it. But, once he flipped it around, Macca noticed his aptitude was getting better. Although McCartney can write with his right hand and drums like a righty, he has almost always played bass, guitar, mandolin and any other stringed instrument he comes across like a lefty. McCartney has a nice collection of rare left-handed guitars, including an exceptional 1960 sunburst Les Paul, one of only a few lefty models made that year. The guys at the factory didn’t even reverse the “Les Paul Model” logo on the headstock, so it’s upside down when Paul plays it. ✔ Gary Moore Gary Moore spent the early part of his career creating massive riffs and blazing solos in rock bands like Thin Lizzy and Skid Row before settling into more blues-flavored tunes in his later life. Whatever music he was conjuring forth from an iconic Les Paul that he bought off Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green, he did so as yet another left-handed convert to a right-handed form of playing. ✔ Ian Paice For decades, Deep Purple has served as a revolving door – with the notable exception of Ian Paice, who has manned the drums for every single incarnation of the hard rock titans. Through it all, Paice has sat behind a left-handed drum kit. That means it’s the reverse of the typical set-up, with Ian’s snare and hi-hat on the right and the kick placed near his left foot. “I never even thought about it until I went to set up my first decent drum kit and saw that it was built for a right-handed player,” Paice recalled years later. “The tom mounting was in the wrong place. When you watch yourself in the mirror, you look right-handed, so you think you look just like everybody else.” ✔ Joe Perry Although Joe Perry writes with his left hand, when it comes to guitar, it’s the same old song and dance. The Aerosmith rocker learned to play righty, which is why many fans have never realized that he’s left-handed. Sharp-eyed Aerosmith fanatics may have noticed something a little wonky about some of Perry’s Stratocasters, left-handed models that he restrung and held backwards (in something we’ll call the “reverse Jimi Hendrix”). Perry still breaks out this oddity when his band performs "Sweet Emotion." ✔ Iggy Pop The punk progenitor is rarely glimpsed holding an instrument (or wearing a shirt, for that matter), but when Iggy Pop plays guitar, he plays it left-handed. When fronting the Stooges, the real wild child’s left-handedness isn’t something you would notice. Yet, if you’ve ever witnessed footage of the infamous “peanut butter incident,” you might notice that Iggy is smearing the stuff on his chest with, you guessed it, his left hand. ✔ Paul Simon While Paul Simon was penning the iconic lyrics to songs like, “The Sound of Silence,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “Kodachrome” and “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” with his left hand, he forced himself to learn to play and create the beloved music and guitar sounds with his right. We think the trade-off worked out well enough in the end. ✔ Ringo Starr Most people know about Paul McCartney, but there are actually two left-handed Beatles. Ringo Starr was born left-handed but was forced by his grandmother to write with his other hand. So by the time he became a musician, he was comfortable with a right-handed drum kit, but had more control over his left hand than most other drummers. As such, he would play fills on songs like "Rain" and "Day Tripper" “backward.” This means he would lead with his left hand and move right-to-left across the toms instead of the usual way of going left-to-right. The unique method was just one more special aspect that made the Beatles different, and confounded righty drummers when they first tried to replicate Ringo’s patterns. ✔ Dennis Wilson The Beach Boys skinsman favored his left hand when playing (though he kicked the bass drum with his right foot), which made him one of the few early proponents of open-handed drumming. A typical right-hander would hit the hi-hat with his right hand and the snare drum with his left and end up crossing his arms while keeping the beat. But lefties like Dennis switched hands, leaving their arms in an open position (hence the name). Some righties will occasionally switch to the open-handed method, but most dislike it because it limits their ability to hit crash cymbals. ✔ Johnny Winter Johnny Winter may have died in 2014, but his music and the imitable way that he played the guitar live on. Born nearly blind and afflicted with albinism, Winter overcame many obstacles in his life, including learning to play right-handed guitar on his path to stardom.
